Physically Fit 57 year oldDear Dr. Vanderslice, I am a vigorous 57 years old with general good health and an active lifestyle. I have been physically active and aerobically fit, all of my adult life, hiking, jogging, biking, playing soccer and racquetball, practicing yoga, etc. occasional weight training and generally considered in excellent shape and physically fit by my friends and acquaintances. However, in the summer of 2003 I began to experience pain in my upper back. That summer I went tubing at Lake Lanier with friends. I was on a double tube with a 14 year old, and we kept signaling the boat to go faster and faster. We were bouncing violently in a prone position and when we hit 35 mph the tube flipped and I was thrown into the water. I was a little shook up, twisted and stiff but did not think much of it. But several weeks later I noticed a continuing ache between my shoulder blades and neck which grew in intensity over time. I started doing stretches and yoga in order to work it out but to no avail. In the course of several months I developed sharp pains in my back between my shoulder blades when I reached up and out, for example when getting a box of cereal out of an overhead cupboard. The ache intensified and interfered with my sleep, I became stiffer and stiffer and in general felt poorly. I decided to visit Dr. Vanderslice whom had successfully treated my teenage son when he had a very painful and stiff neck which occurred during a lacrosse game. Dr. Vanderslice started with a total assessment of my chiropractic state. Postural exams, weight balance, and spinal x-rays, and flexibility assessments. The x-rays clearly showed multiple subluxations in my spine. Vertebrae in my lower back, middle back, and neck where visibly out of alignment. In addition my neck had lost the normal curved shape and there was significant compression of the discs between vertebrae in the neck. After discussion with Dr. Vanderslice of my spinal condition and prognosis for improvement I decided to go for a complete correction of my spine and entered on a regimen of scheduled weekly treatments and periodic spinal x-rays and assessments. The results have been terrific and exceeded my expectations. Within two weeks the dull ache was gone from my upper back, and within two months all incidents of sharp pain had ceased. X-rays show the normal curvature of my spine is re-establishing itself and the compressed discs in my spine have increased 50% in thickness. In the 6 months I have been under treatment I have regained ¾ inch of height and significantly increased my overall flexibility. I sleep better and feel healthy and invigorated. I particularly like the fact that I can personally see a structural change in my spine via the x-rays and personally feel the improvement in pain, flexibility and my overall physical state. I’m convinced that this is a systemic and long term improvement to my overall health and recommend a comprehensive assessment and spinal management program to individuals who are experience stiffness and aching back and neck.
